About the Professional Home Builder's Association (PHBIA:)
The “PHBIA accredited MASTER HOME BUILDER®" is a twofold program that encompasses both experience and education leading to certification. It is designed to have practical relevance and address current issues faced by the home construction and land development industry. The certification mark is an excellent choice for career development and personal growth. The Alberta Home Builders’ Association (AHBA) approve of the courses and The Alberta New Home Warranty Program (ANHWP) has a requirement for continuing education in setting client rates. This program is designed for: Home builders, renovators, contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers, trades, manufacturers, construction managers and ambitious employees. Persons who wish to gain management positions in the home construction and land development industry. Achievers wishing to improve themselves and their company’s growth and performance. Those committed to increasing their knowledge to meet the demands of a constantly changing industry This program is designed for: Home builders, renovators, contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers, trades, manufacturers, construction managers and ambitious employees. Persons who wish to gain management positions in the home construction and land development industry. Achievers wishing to improve themselves and their company’s growth and performance. Those committed to increasing their knowledge to meet the demands of a constantly changing industry. FOURTEEN Courses Required for Certification NINE MANDATORY: Basic Business Law Building Codes and Standards Business Principles for the Business of Home Building Communication & Negotiation for the Home Builder Estimating/Purchasing Finance and Accounting Moisture Control Technician New Home Marketing Service Excellence A CHOICE OF FIVE COURSES FROM: Blueprint Reading Building Solutions Construction Administration Construction Fundamentals Construction Supervision Land Development National Renovator Training Program Sales Management AND/OR a maximum of two course credits drawn from the Institute Executive Seminars or Certified New Home Sales Professional (CNHSP). * A maximum of two-option course credits from a choice of: 1) Any four - courses from CNHSP i.e. one credit per two-courses taken (excluding New Home Marketing and Service Excellence) OR 2) Attendance at Executive or other authorized seminar(s) OR 3) A combination of one of each of the preceeding. * IN ADDITION Aspirants are permitted to challenge up to two courses if they feel that they have the training, education or experience. Contact the Institute for challenge details. Locations The Calgary courses are conducted at two SAIT Campuses. Check the course confirmation information for details. The courses are delivered by the Institute in the rest of Alberta, primarily in Edmonton. Courses are held in other centres on demand. The four-day courses (28 – 30 hours of classroom work) are generally held on two Fridays and Saturdays with a weekend off in between the two sets of days. Participants often have to submit a project and write a multiple-choice exam. Each course pass mark is 70 per cent (overall) to qualify for Institute certification. SAIT participants must sign a Freedom of Information Permission (FOIP) for SAIT to forward their marks to the Institute. Graduate Certification Requirements The “PHBIA accredited Graduate Master Home Builder®” certification mark requires successful completion of the following: 1) The 14 courses to acquire the “PHBIA accredited Graduate Master Home Builder®” certification. 2) Agreement to abide by the Institute Code of Ethics and Rules and Regulations. 3)Company (employer) or individual membership must be held in a local association of the AHBA. Certification as a "PHBIA accredited Certified Master Home Builder ®" 1) To acquire the “PHBIA accredited Certified Master Home Builder®” comply with the following: a. The “PHBIA accredited Graduate Master Home Builder” shall have a minimum of five-years related experience as an owner or as a senior manager and be in active new home construction as a full time business for a minimum of three-years. b. Company or individual membership shall be held in both a local of the AHBA and in the ANHWP (no other new home warranty program is recognized). 2) Candidates shall apply for each of the “PHBIA accredited Graduate Master Home Builder®” certification and “PHBIA accredited Certified Master Home Builder®” certification as well as pay an application fee. Right to Retain Certification The right to retain each certification is held by the individual at the pleasure of the Institute. The accreditation and the certificate that evidences it remain the property of the Institute and may therefore be withdrawn. A company with an accredited Certified Master Home Builder®” in its’ employ may use the certification for as long as that person remains as a direct employee or officer and both the individual and the company abide by the Institute Code of Ethics and the Institute Rules and Regulations. Description of Certification The certification shall be described by the individual as “PHBIA accredited Graduate Master Home Builder®”. When the graduate becomes accredited as a “PHBIA accredited Certified Master Home Builder®” and a company is therefore certified, all company legal and promotional material shall use “PHBIA accredited Certified Master Home Builder®”. Decals exhibiting the Institute logo on company show home windows or on vehicles for those holding “Certified” status may be less descriptive such as “Accredited Master Home Builder” or “Certified Master Home Builder”. Please note that the Institute logo shall be displayed to counter any form of advertising utilized by those individuals not accredited by the Institute. Accreditation Renewal Requirements PHBIA accredited holders shall maintain their status by taking one course or authorized seminar every two years, continue to abide by the Institute Code of Ethics and the Institute Rules and Regulations and pay an annual renewal fee. Membership in good standing shall be also be maintained in the AHBA and in the ANHWP as applicable. Code of Ethics Graduates of the Master Home Builder Certification agree to conduct themselves by the following: Master Home Builders of the Professional Home Builders Institute of Alberta recognize that professionalism and the professional ethics of the Institute are founded upon the spirit of integrity, devotion and competence to enhance the image of the Alberta home building industry. Master Home Builders support and use the Code of Ethics for their guide of conduct at all times. And further recognize that following the Code of Ethics enhances the dignity and status of their profession. Master Home Builders in Alberta are dedicated to enhancing the publics’ understanding of the home building industry and shall do all things necessary to ensure their professional knowledge will benefit the home buying public. Master Home Builders will build their reputation on the basis of merit and shall not compete unfairly with other builders or compete primarily on the basis of price without due consideration for other factors. Master Home Builders will be devoted to and demonstrate at all times, to associates in training, a spirit of understanding and professionalism.
